Tolerance describes an allowed percentage around nominal resistance under the component's specified conditions. Temperature coefficient describes a rate of resistance change per kelvin, expressed in ppm/K. They use different bands and answer different questions. Neither value alone states power rating, safe current, usable temperature range, or measured resistance.
Tolerance creates a symmetric nominal range
For nominal resistance R and tolerance p percent, the absolute tolerance is R × p ÷ 100. Minimum is R minus that amount; maximum is R plus it. For 4700 Ω at 5%, the amount is 235 Ω and the range is 4465–4935 Ω. For 10000 Ω at 1%, it is 100 Ω and the range is 9900–10100 Ω. ResistorCode keeps these calculations exact.
TCR needs context before it predicts change
A sixth-band value such as brown 100 ppm/K is a coefficient, not a resistance range and not an operating-temperature rating. Turning it into a change estimate requires a reference resistance at a defined reference temperature and a temperature difference, while real limits remain in the datasheet. The tool therefore reports the code and meaning but stops before thermal or safety advice.
